I like to start off by saying that I had a great run being in this online journalism class. I mean I enjoyed that I got to be writing again which I’ve done in a while. This is my movie list and if you don’t like well then don’t read it. This is in no particular order by the way.

10. Nightmare on Elm Street (1984)

My favorite horror movie growing, I would watch this at night even though it would give me nightmares. I really liked this because as a kid, you are taught don’t look under the bed there’s a “boogeyman” under there. But, in the movie if you go to sleep you enter into this realm with this scary man named “Freddy Krueger”. The thing that spooked me the most about this movie was not just the killings or the dreams, it was the song that played which goes like this;
“One, two Freddie’s coming for you
Three ,four better lock the door
Five, six grab a crucifix
Seven ,eight better stay up late
Nine, ten never sleep again”

I was watching this documentary recently called something.. “Legacy” and was interested to see how this movie came about. There was a story that came out a long time ago where these kids accused a teacher of touching them inappropriately.  Also, it’s called “Elm Street” because that’s where JFK (John F. Kennedy) got assassinated on this block. A little trivia no one really knew about, but now you do! I picked this also because I really love Wes Craven films. I really liked the 1994 one,  the 7th version.

9.  Misery (1990)

This movie reminds me of the quote “Misery Loves Company”. This is about a crazy woman who holds this famous writer hostage and tells him to write a new novel. She is this obsessed fan that in his latest book “Misery”, she doesn’t want her killed off. So she forces him to rewrite a new novel despite his rejection to her.  I personally chose this movie because I used to watch this when I was younger, every time it came on. The parts that made this movie intense is what I like to call it, was when he tried to escape and the door was locked so he used a bobby pin. Another brutal part was when she hit his legs with a sledgehammer. I got to say this is one crazy woman. I love how he used the old type writer, I remember when I was younger my mom had one and I used to pretend to be typing a story that I wanted to share. I also loved Stephen King movies.

8. Sister Act 2 (1993)

I like the second movie better because Whoopi Goldberg who plays the nun tries to help the kids in the music class. She inspires them that there is more to life than failing in school. My favorite part was when they were on stage for the contest and if they won it would go towards the school. Since it was being shut down. I also loved the gospel songs being played such as “Ain’t No Mountain High Enough”, and “Joyful, Joyful”. The best advice in the movie was to go out and be yourself. I also like the quote from the nun she says. ” If you wake up in the morning and you can’t of nothing but writing, then you a writer”. If you get a chance you should watch the first one as well. It is just as funny as the rest of them.

7. Beetle Juice (1988)

I loved this movie as a kid. If you say his name three times this guy “Beetlejuice” appears. But there is no killing whatsoever, he just likes to annoy you til you can’t stand it anymore. This movie is about a married couple named Adam and Barbara and they get into an accident leaving this as a spirit or ghost. Their house gets sold to someone else, and the parents have a daughter who seemingly enough can actually see the hear the dead. I also love Tim Burton movies, like “The Nightmare before Christmas,” The Addams’ Family”, “Edward Scissorhands“, etc

6. Back To the Future 2 (1989)

chose this one out of the three because I like the futuristic parts like the “hover board”, and the pizza that’s so small but when it’s in the mini oven it becomes big, also the Television where you can watch multiple shows at one time. So Marty Mc Fly goes to the future to 2015, and tries to save his future family from falling apart. Also, Marty’s enemy Biff steals his almanac which contains information about the past, present and future. Since, the last movie you should have learned that if you alter what suppose to happen it has its consequences. So “Doc” (this nutty scientist) and Marty set out to make things right. I enjoyed this film very much, I would also watch the first one and the third one as well whenever they are on television.

5. Honey, I Shrunk the Kids (1989)

It’s about this nutty scientist that experiments in his attic and always tells the kids to not go in there because he’s always busy. His latest work was  shrinking these down to their seemingly abnormal size.  What do you think happens next ? Well the kids are  playing in the yard, and they accidentally hit the baseball and it breaks the Szalinski’s window causing the machine to activate and shrink the kids. I actually wondered what it would be like to be the size of a bug. I would imagined it’d be quite an exercise! So since the kids are tiny, they have to travel from the backyard to the attic and bring them back to their normal selves. This is one of those family movies that is why I chose this film and it’s funny at the same time.

4. My Cousin Vinny (1992)

I chose this movie because I literally know every line in the movie. Since, I practically watched it a million times. This movie is funny as well and is great to watch. The movie is about two friends drive out to their university they got into UCLA. They happen to pass by Alabama and make a pit stop at the local store for snacks.  They pay for everything but forget that they left the tuna in their pocket. But this is where they immediately get arrested for something much different, which is murder and robbery. Bill and Stan the two got confused and thought they were charged for shoplifting. The best part of the movie is when these two hire one of his cousin’s who is not even a lawyer yet to take their case. He is known throughout the movie as “cousin Vinny”, so  when he’s in court he used his fiance as an expert in automobiles. This is my favorite part where she proves her expertise, and everyone’s mouth shuts up. This is a movie you can watch over and over again and it never gets old.

3. Big Daddy(1999)

One of my favorite movies of all time. Every time I watch it I laugh because Adam Sandler  is a funny actor if I say so myself. Do you agree? I watched almost all his movies I can say and this movie in particular I see all the time. This guy, Sonny Koufax (Adam Sandler) is 32 years old law graduate student who tries to adopt a five-year old that coincidently shows up at his doorstep. It just so happens to be related to his friend that is out-of-town on business, one of his flings a long time ago. So he decides in the meantime to take care of him like his own. The funniest part was when the kid wet the bed and he used newspaper to cover it up or when he spilled milk and did the same thing, Another funny part was when Sonny was trying to get back with his girlfriend that left him and when he went to her apartment, he found another guy. But to my surprise it was an old guy! I was literally laughing so hard but it was so gross at the same time. A favorite quote was at the end the kid sees the old man and says, “is that the guy with the old balls”. This is a must see movie, you could watch it over and over again and it would still be just as funny.

2. Ghost (1990)

I picked this as the best romantic movie out of all the ones I’ve seen. It’s about this couple moving into their new apartment and are happily in-love only to find out it comes to an end. The couple Sam and Molly are robbed in an alley way by a guy named Willie which was in no way an accident.  Willie pulls out a gun and they start fighting for it until shots go off and Sam is dead.  The saddest part for me was near the end when Sam saw Molly again before he left to go to heaven. It was the most touching  moments of this film. I also liked when Sam was a ghost on Earth and he started to pick up tricks from this other ghost about how to move inanimate objects.  Also when he went through people and started controlling them.  The whole purpose of this movie was for Sam to get revenge on the people who killed him and save his beloved girlfriend from getting killed herself.

1. Sandlot (1993)

I picked this because I watched this movie growing up. My little brother liked it as well and would watch it with me whenever it was on. This movie is about these bunch of kids that played baseball in this abandoned field next to a grumpy old neighbor who had a dog the size of a tiger or lion! One day this new kid on the block wants to play with these kids so he gets his dads old baseball which has an autographed signature of Babe Ruth. I’m here thinking to myself if I were him I would not play with that ball. But surely enough the baseball pop fly’s out into the neighbor’s yard where the dog is.This is also one of my favorite baseball movies, along with “Angel’s in the Outfield, “Bad News Bears“, “Hardball”, “Mr. 3000″ etc. This movie represents a childhood for me because me, my little brother, cousins, the whole neighborhood I used to live in, we played baseball!. I mean it was one of those things you can’t forget and most people should be grateful to have.

Ask a Fan!

1. What is your favorite movie? Explain. (Rephrased) What are your favorite movies to watch?

Baby Boom, Planes Trains & Automobiles, What a Girl Wants that sort of thing..

2.What kind of movies do you prefer ? ie. action, comedy, horror, romance, etc Why?

I prefer horror because I like the gruesomeness, messy, all the body parts lying around being ripped apart and seeing the gory. Such movies like Nightmare on Elmstreet, Friday the 13th, Halloween.

3. Do you prefer the movies or stay at home? Do you watch them when they first come to theaters or wait? Why?

I usually go to the movies when I have the money in my pocket. Otherwise I stay home and wait. These days movies are expensive to watch, back then it was a lot cheaper then it was today.

4. Who do you usually go with?  Why?

I usually bring my daughter and sometimes my sister-in-law. If she likes the movie she comes, if not, then my daughter will always keep me company. We have a girls night out except it’s not on the day it comes out it’s usually on a Saturday. Since I have work on Friday. Afterward, we go out to eat, somewhere nice and enjoy yourselves without the boys interrupting us!

5. Last question, Since you know about back then; How has the movies changed from back then to now?  How cheaper was it it ? How much was everything? Explain.

You didn’t see all the blood and guts like you see today. They show everything and then some. The movies were $ .25 (cents) a showing, soda was $ .15 (cents), candy was either .5(cents) or .10(cents), Popcorn was .25(cents).  Everything is too expensive the tickets, $10-$15 depending on where you go and can be even higher. Popcorn you spend $.5.00 now, since then it has risen more and more. Hot-dogs as well was $ .15- $ .25 now it’s $3.50- $4.00. It just isn’t the same anymore.

Anna since you go to the movies so often, I thought you would like to know that there’s a way to buy 2 tickets for less than $10 on Fandango. I’ve been doing it for more than a year and I got as low as $6 for two tickets. Email me if you wanna know more: ncbenhk@hotmail.com
